    Foundational History

     

    Founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson as the Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art, it has undergone several transformations and relocations within Boston. Today, it proudly sits in the city's Theater District. Originally named to honor Professor Lewis B. Monroe, the Monroe Conservatory of Oratory was later renamed Emerson College of Oratory. It was finally shortened to Emerson College in 1939, a name it has proudly carried since.
